Fall Season Kickoff: The King Street Art Festival

Fall Season Kickoff: The King Street Art Festival

September 17, 2015 / editor

Six blocks of art.

200 featured artists.

Live music.

This is the 13th Annual Alexandria King Street Art Festival, happening in just a couple days–September 19 & 20–and we couldn’t be more excited. This fall is shaping up to be incredible, judging by this month! Let’s kick off the season with tasty food, great arts and entertainment, and good friends.

Here’s how to get the most out of  the King Street Art Festival this year in Alexandria!

King Street Art Festival

Find Your Work of Art

This whole amazing festival is free to enter, so don’t worry about buying tickets. Start your day on Old Town Alexandria on King Street–the festival runs from Washington Street to the Potomac River waterfront. Stroll through blocks full of paintings, sculptures, photography, ceramics, jewelry, and every other imaginable piece of art.

See if you can spot Anne Andersson’s life-sized animal sculptures made from clay, sisal fibers, and glass. Support Andersson’s passion for conservation and species preservation, and purchase a stunning piece of art to complement your luxury apartment in Alexandria.

Purchase Showstopping Jewelry

If you’re in the market for unique jewelry, you’ll most certainly find it here. If you’re lucky, you’ll discover Sheryl Blais’s handcrafted crocheted pieces, each one a masterful combination of beads, metal, or pearl. If you’re a vintage jewelry hunter, search for Adrienne Barrios’s “Vintage Elegance” collection, where a small silver pocket watch transforms into an elegant necklace, and a metal Victrola label gains new life as a gold chained bracelet. Looking for a breath of fresh island air? Look for Nancy and Christopher Adom, who combine fine gems, crystals, and silver to create fresh and elegant necklaces, earrings, and bracelet sets.

Stock Up on Tasty Ice Cream

Summer may be over, but ice cream still goes on. The Alexandria Art League is hosting its popular “Ice Cream Bowl Fundraiser,” where festival attendees can purchase one of 1,000 handmade ceramic bowls filled with local artisanal ice cream for $15. Sugar rush for a good cause–furthering arts in Alexandria!

Dance the Day Away

After all of that ice cream, you might be feeling pretty energetic. Well, that’s what the Alexandria Mobile Art Lab’s disco dance party and birthday celebration is for. Head to Market Square Saturday night at 7pm (on Royal Street), and dance to support the official art mobile of Alexandria.

At the end of the night, there’s no better place to return than to your newly art-filled apartment in Alexandria. Relax, kick off your shoes, and be thankful you live in a place where art, history, and culture all collide.
