Happy Hours in Alexandria (that are Close to The Parker!)

August 20, 2015 / editor

It’s 5 o’clock. Do you know where the best happy hours in Alexandria are?

But seriously. It’s important to know your favorite bar for happy hour, especially when you live minutes away from Old Town Alexandria, the home to some of Virginia’s most loved bars. For one thing, you’ll be able to give smart recommendations to friends from out of town, and for another–you can relive every season of How I Met Your Mother with your friends every week.

Now, let’s be honest–you’re not going to travel an hour for happy hour. Choosing your favorite bar or pub definitely has to do with quality, but even more to do with proximity. Here are our favorite happy hours in Alexandria that are close to The Parker!

(Note: we’ve included transportation directions for your Uber and for the Huntington Metro when it makes sense.)

#1 For No-Diet Southern Specials: Southside 815

(6 minute drive )

Happy Hour: Monday — Thursday, 4:00-7:30pm and Friday till 7:30pm

We’ve covered our favorite Southern restaurants in Alexandria before. Now it’s time to talk Happy Hour. Southside 815 may not be an exact replica of your favorite restaurant in Tennessee, but you’ll still get a solid selection of Southern delights for happy hour. Choose from ½ priced burgers, 50 cent wings, mini nachos, and mini pulled pork and oyster sliders. Drink specials can vary, so get there early to secure your spot. Oh, and obviously, all diets will have to take a break for the night.

#2 For Foie Gras Fans: BRABO

(6 minute drive // 13 minute ride on the M)

Happy Hour: Monday — Saturday, 5:00-6:30pm and Sunday, 5:00pm – close

Foodies enjoy BRABO quite a bit–one raving reviewer even used the word “foodgasm” to describe their culinary experience. Dinner is one thing–but you’ll be glad to know you can snag food and drink specials (including their rather large wine pours) during Happy Hour.

And their bar snacks really up the bar on bar snacks. Choose anything on the bar menu, from Norwegian Salmon Tartare with creme fraiche to cucumber and melon salad to tasty Lobster Fritters with vermouth cream at half price. Another great thing to know about: every Wednesday, BRABO hosts a wine night, where you can get 50% off a special selection of their high quality bottled wines.

#3 For More-Than-Just-a-Bite-Bar Food: Mackie’s Bar & Grill

(7 minute drive)

Happy Hour: Monday — Friday, 3:00-7:00pm

We all have that friend: everyone’s out for Happy Hour, and put in their orders. Wings. Jalapeno poppers. Nachos.

That friend orders: one order of mac ‘n’ cheese, wings, a burger, and truffle fries.

Hey, maybe you are that friend, and there’s no shame in that! Especially at Mackie’s Bar & Grill, where you can order up some substantial bar food to go with your drinks. Their Bulgogi Hoagie, with thin sliced rib eye, Korean marinade, and spicy korean sauce, will keep your hunger at bay as you sip on $3 domestic bottled beers, $5 mackie’s ale, or $5 rail drinks. Forget finger foods–Happy Hour is the new dinner.

#4 For Perfect Food/Alcohol Pairings: Vermilion

(7 minute drive)

Happy Hour: Monday — Friday, 5:00-7:00 pm and after 10:00 pm all nights

Hush puppies with three dipping sauces. House cut fries amply sprinkled with old bay. Steak tartare with shaved trumpet royale and spiced olive tapenade.

There’s really no wrong way to do Happy Hour, is there? But sometimes, your usual draft just doesn’t cut it. Head to Vermilion and enjoy some incredible drinks ranging from a small batch bourbon on the rocks to an expertly-mixed drink with Buffalo Trace, coffee-infused Bonal and Cocchi Vermouth. Feel free to ask questions, and explore the best food and alcohol pairings at a lower price.

#5 For Fresh Oysters: Hank’s Oyster Bar

(7 minute drive)

Happy Hour: Monday –Friday, 5:00-7:00 pm and after 10:00 pm all nights

Believe it or not, some people are actually repulsed by seafood. Well, they’re probably not from around here. For the rest of us, head to Hank’s Oyster Bar and enjoy fresh, substantial oysters with a killer sauce for $1.25 during Happy Hour. There are other things here, too, but this is really the most important thing to know.

Oh–and their late-night bar menu’s pretty awesome, too: enjoy ½ price on their  raw bar every night from 10 PM – 12 AM at the bar (select oysters, shrimp, clams,  and ceviche).

#6 For Solid Pub Food: O’Shaugnessy’s Pub

(8 minute drive // 15 minute ride on the M)

Happy Hour: Monday — Friday, 4:00-6:00pm

O’Shaughnessy’s Pub is one of those divey, comfortable neighborhood spots that feel like they’ve been around for 100 years. In reality, this pub has been around since 2008, and since then, has gained a loyal following for their friendly service, interesting clientele (“a cast of characters that one might find in a Charles Bukowski novel, according to one review”), and great bar food.

Head there for $3 off all appetizers (dine-in only). Don’t try to check their website for deals (they’re hosted on Myspace. That sums up this place). Instead, go to their Facebook page for updates on drink specials.

Important note: the upstairs area is smoker-friendly.

Well, that about sums up our favorite Happy Hours in our favorite neighborhood in Virginia. Have any more you’d like to share? Let us know on Facebook.
